Victory on the Street Seminar

Hoover High School

19 July 2004

The ATOA summer session included a series of incident debriefs complete with lessons learned and training tips. The presenters were Anniston PD's CPT Layton McGrady, Hoover PD's SGT Curt Carpenter and US Army Ranger veteran Scott Galentine.

Each presentation was a debrief of a mission each of the respective organizations participated in. The Anniston SRT's service of court paperwork resulted in the death of the suspect and wounding and subsequent retirement of three tactical officers. The Hoover SRT presentation was of a 13 hour stand-off that started as a domestic violence call which ended after 61 rounds were exchanged and two entries were conducted to find the suspect. Scott Galentine's presentation was based on his experience as a US Army Ranger in Somalia in 1993. The incident was chronicled in the book and movie "BlackHawk Down!"

The three debriefs emphasized the importance of teamwork and hard realistic training. Each team member had to face tough decisions as operators and as leaders. The aftermath of each event had its own price to pay also. The common thread of each presentation was the preparation for operations is as important as the execution of the mission.
